A Carfax check means seeing the past of any vehicle sold in the US market from its 17-character VIN. A full Carfax report cannot be obtained for free — Carfax charges for every lookup, and sites promising a free report usually show nothing but a VIN decoder. Accident history, odometer readings and title status appear only in the official report.

Yes. Carfax covers vehicles sold in the US market, so it gives the fullest history for cars imported from America. Most Copart and IAAI lots fall into this category.

In borderline cases the check does not stop the request — if Carfax has no history for that VIN, your report is saved and you can use it for another VIN free of charge.

The VIN is in the lower-left corner of the windscreen, on the driver's door-frame label, in the vehicle documents, and also on the Copart or IAAI lot page. All four must show the same 17 characters — the letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN.
