What Is a Carfax Report and Why Does It Matter? Check Vehicle History by VIN

AutoMakler Team 2026-06-13 7 min read

Carfax is the most trusted source of history information for used cars sold in the USA. Operating since 1986, it runs the world's largest vehicle-history database with more than 30 billion records. When you buy a car at a US auction from Azerbaijan, a Carfax check is a must.

What does a Carfax report show?

A single Carfax report covers the following details:

  • Accident history — how many accidents the car was in and how serious the damage was
  • Title status — Clean / Salvage / Rebuilt / Flood / Lemon Law
  • Odometer readings — the mileage recorded at each service, plus signs of a rollback
  • Number of owners — how many different owners it has had
  • Type of use — personal, commercial, taxi, rental, or fleet
  • Service history — inspections, oil changes, and major repairs
  • Recalls — whether the manufacturer ever issued a recall
  • Geographic history — which states the car was registered in

Why is Carfax so important?

A car at auction can look clean at first glance, yet hide a serious accident, flood damage, or an odometer rollback in its history. Carfax:

  1. Protects you from being deceived
  2. Helps you understand the real market value
  3. Can serve as documentation when you resell the car in Azerbaijan
  4. May be needed to confirm the title status during customs clearance

Can you get a Carfax report directly from Azerbaijan?

Unfortunately, no. The Carfax.com website only accepts cards issued by US banks, and the service is designed for use within the USA. That is exactly why intermediaries like AutoMakler are needed.

Where do I find the VIN?

The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17-character identifier of every car. To find it, look:

  • On the driver's side at the bottom corner of the windshield (from inside the cabin)
  • On the side panel of the driver's door (a stick-on label)
  • In the car's documents (Title, Registration, Insurance Card)
  • On the Copart and IAAI lot pages

Red flags to watch for in a Carfax report

If you see any of these on an auction car's Carfax, be careful:

  • Multiple owners (3+ owners in a short period) — could signal a problem
  • Rental / fleet use — the car has been driven hard
  • Odometer rollback — the mileage has been tampered with
  • Flood damage — water damage (one of the worst possibilities)
  • Total loss — the insurer declared it a total loss
